The last time the Nigerian telecommunications commission (NCC) approved Telecom tariff increments in Nigeria was in 2013. Regardless network providers (MTN, GLO, Airtel & 9mobile) have been adjusting their prices till early 2025. The increments have been largely very little and negligible. Customers didn’t really bother because it wasn’t so much.
Despite the economic changes and the struggle to break even and keep up with staff strength network providers were able to hold it down till 2025. As at 2024, 1gb 30 days validity was around 270 naira to 300 naira for all the network providers in Nigeria.
Increment of Data Prices
In January 2025, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved 50% increase in tariff which primarily affects data. This was meant to take effect in March 2025.
MTN and Airtel went ahead and increased their data prices by 200% instead of 50% as approved by the NCC. This saw 1gb 30 days validity data jump from around 300 naira to 800 naira per GB for MTN and Airtel. MTN also started hoarding some of their data packages like CG and CGlite. SME was largely unstable and kept changing prices every hour of the day. 15gb MTN Awoof of 2,000 naira jumped to 6,000 naira. Aside increasing the data prices, the quality of the data reduced drastically and finishes very fast.
Airtel was a bit stable in prices but the prices also jumped by 200% instead of 50% as directed by NCC so that Nigerians can afford it.
Only GLO and 9mobile left the increments at 50% as directed by the NCC. Although they went ahead to make some changes in their plans also but it was not like that of MTN and Airtel.

Why NCC Accepted the Increment in 2025
Days after the announcement, the NCC officials came out to the public to tell the public why they accepted and approved the hike. They claimed it was to make the network providers not to run loses and shut down businesses in Nigeria or even risk the possibility of massive sack and job losses in the telecommunications sector in Nigeria. One way or the other, their point is justifiable and considerate leaving it at 50% increase.
Why GLO is the Best for Browsing in 2025
1gb GLO CG that was around 300 naira is now 450 naira. 10gb GLO Awoof is just 2,000 naira compared to the exorbitant rates of other networks. Aside from GLO leaving prices fair they also did not reduce the quantity and quality of their data so much. Their data still lasts a little like it used to be prior to the increment in March 2025.
As it stands GLO is best network for browsing. This is in terms of the data prices, price stability, longer expiration dates, data volume stability, bonuses of subscription and data night life. They are relatively much more affordable than the rest. GLO network is trying, they can be trusted and if given a wider data customer base they will surely do better. Already they are working on better customer experience in browsing with their data.
Out of 24 hours daily, GLO offers fast browsing for at least 18 hours. The remaining hours will be a struggle to load pages fast during browsing but with little patience it goes through eventually. Own a GLO sim today and subscribe to a data package. Enjoy cheaper alternative data in 2025.
